Planning Agent
Planning agents emit inspectable steps. The plan can be executed by the same agent or by workers. Planning is a stage, not hidden chain-of-thought.
Goal → plan → act → result

Goal
What done means.
Goal.
Shape
The type is the contract. If you cannot write it, you do not have this pattern yet.
type Plan = { steps: string[]; stop: string };
type PlanningAgent = {
goal: string;
plan: Plan;
act: (step: string) => Observation;
};When to use it
Use when the task has dependencies, multiple tools, or a need to stop early.
Not this
Not an unbounded inner monologue. If you cannot show or edit the plan, it is not this pattern.
Risks
- 01
Plans that never update.
- 02
Planning forever without acting.
